Leeward Fleet

Ice Breakers was an invited competition that brought temporary installations to Toronto’s waterfront, designed to enliven the city during its coldest months and “break the ice” through moments of warmth and connection.

RAW’s Leeward Fleet, built with Anex Works, paid homage to Toronto’s harbour history with three pivoting structures reminiscent of early iceboats. Using black enamel masts and vibrant repurposed sails donated by a local craftsman, the installation animated Canada Square with wind-driven movement and vivid color.

Transforming a harsh winter setting into a site of play and reflection, Leeward Fleet invited visitors to engage with natural forces while celebrating the city’s past and sparking dialogue in the present.
